Step 2: Identify Obstacles and Solve Problems

Walk Your Escape Routes

Physically walk every route you drew:

Check each door:

  • Can you open it easily?

  • Does it stick?

  • Are locks working?

  • Is it blocked by furniture?

  • Can children reach the lock/handle?

Check each window:

  • Does it open fully?

  • Is it painted shut?

  • Can you reach the lock?

  • Is the screen easy to remove or push out?

  • Is anything blocking it (furniture, plants)?

  • How far is the drop to ground?

Common Problems and Solutions

  • Problem: Window is painted shut

    • Solution: Cut paint seal, lubricate track, practice opening monthly

  • Problem: Window has security bars

    • Solution: Install quick-release mechanisms (required by code in many areas), everyone knows how to open

  • Problem: Second-story window too high to jump safely

    • Solution: Purchase escape ladder, store under bed or in closet, practice deployment

  • Problem: Door blocked by heavy furniture

    • Solution: Move furniture, create clear path

  • Problem: Child's room door locks from inside

    • Solution: Reverse lock or remove it (fire safety risk)

  • Problem: Basement window too small

    • Solution: Consider enlarging (egress window), use door as only exit, don't use room as bedroom

  • Problem: Cluttered hallway

    • Solution: Clear it, establish "keep clear" zone

  • Problem: Gate or fence blocks exit from yard

    • Solution: Ensure gate unlocks from inside, keep path clear
